Abstains For Seniors

Early this semester some made a post about the drop in the number of beer commericals seen on tv. Whether this is true or not I am not sure, but one thing I am almost certain of is the increase in the number of ads for drugs helping with erectile dysfunction. Ok now that you have stopped laughing think about it. Every commercial break there is an add for Viagra, Levitra or Cialiss. There are ads with guys growing horns, or a guy who can not throw a football through a tire. (I am not sure what that has to do with ED, but that is beside the point) Former Sen. and Presidential Candidate Bob Dole was even a spokesmen for Viagra. With so much excitement over these drugs, many seniors are trying to figure out how they can pay for them. Well not to worry, the Bush administration has announced that at the beginning of 2006 the Medicare prescription drug law will cover erectile dysfunction drugs for seniors. Are we as young adults supposed to pay our taxes dollars for the pleasure of seniors. The Medicare program is not supposed to cover lifestyle drugs. If Viagra was needed for someone to live then Medicare should definitely pay for it. With almost 60 million people on Medicare, and more to come as the baby boomer generation gets older, funds will be scarce. How can we as a country put one person’s pleasure above another person’s life? With our nation accruing more and more debt is this the best way tax dollars can be spent. Has this nation come to the point where it puts pleasure above necessity?
