Starbucks on Every Corner

Doesn't it seem that in every major city; or almost anyplace you look nowadays there is a Starbucks on every corner? Well, lately this may become possible even in little cities, towns...etc. Starbuck has now made plans to change the number of coffee shops they hope to open from 30,000 to 40,000. Just this year Starbucks' revenue was $7.8 billion from the current fiscal year from their current 12,421 locations. Their founder and current chairman, Howard Schultz was quoted as saying"We don't believe that we are even 50 percent through to the unique opportunity we have in North America." With a broadening of customer base it could be possible to see a Starbucks on every corner within a few years.

What I am concerned is that along with more and more Starbucks emerge, it may increase the difficulty of managing such a big corporation. I remember nearly a year ago, the moon cakes that one Starbucks sells were found unsafe to eat, which made people feel uncomfortable that even such as famous cafĂ© still has food quality problem. There is an old saying in China that “tall trees catch much wind”, which means if you are so huge, so famous, people will focus on you, and find some defects of you. Maybe the idiom is not very appropriate here, but I think through the expansion of Starbucks, there will be many new problems waiting to be solved.

I also think that Starbucks has not yet reached monopoly status, nor are they too close. I come from a town without a Starbucks, and I have never been to a starbucks, but there are other coffee shops. This may not be true everywhere, but coming from a town without a Starbucks I find that several of their would be competitors are not large chains of franchises and are smaller locally focused shops.
