Soft drink sales lose their fizz

Because people today are more health concious, they are steering away from drinking soda and leaning more towards drinking healthier drinks such as bottled water and sports drinks. The leading manufactures of soft drinks saw their sales decline the last three quarters of 2005. The soft drink manufacturers are watching the sales figures, which increased in the first quarter of 2006. Even though more people are drinking healther drinks, the sales of carbonated soft drinks is also popular and the companies are focusing on the sales of both groups of drinks.

One thing I have noticed over the past year is the heavy increase in diet pop advertising and sales. Almost every commercial I see on TV today is for a diet pop, not the regular. More varieties are being offered such as Diet Black Cherry Vanilla Coke and heavily marketed. This seems to be the industries' response to an increasing consumer awareness of their beverages. Try to consume "healthy" foods and beverages seems to be the "in" thing to do these days and Coca-Cola and Pepsi (and so on) have caught on to this. New variations of Gaterade, Diet Pops, and "vitamin water" have steadily made their way to store shelves and are quickly being sold off of them. I see this trend rising until the next health fad reaches consumers.

I think that diet pop will stay around for a long time now. Not only do we not see as many comercial for regular pop, but we are only seeing comercials for diet pop, flavored water, and healthier drinks. In order for the pop industry to get back into the "in" crowd, they are going to have to move into the "fit" crowd.

It is still true that America is one of the most overweight nations in the world. But what has recently changed is the movement to get healthier. And of course, we are doing it the American way, the difficult way. "Don't stop having the things that make us unhealthy, just change them." Mountain Dew has finally gone diet and Coke has introduced its Zero line, with no calories at all. Will this make America drink less carbonated drinks? Will we just drink more of the diet and zero calorie drinks? Will we start a new line of diet and zero bottled water? Will we not be fat anymore? Only time will tell. The baby boomers grew up drinking the regular sodas and their kids also went through the same era. So its most likely that they will substitute the old ones with a similar brand, like diet or zero. But I still think it is likely that beverages will continue to evolve into "healthier and healthier" drinks. Until something is done to stop companies from using preservatives and ingredients that consumers can't read let alone pronounce, there will always be a "less fattening" product.

This is something actually that I was interested in learning about. I was wondering what was going on with Soda sales all across the world. As you walk down streets, through shopping centers, and around town it is very comman to see people carrying with them bottled water. Earlier when Soda was first invented that was the hot item you would see while walking through town, but water is a hot ticket item. People pay a $1.00 for a bottle and you can get it out of your own sink at home, for free. Who ever invented this idea is a genious. I am interested to see what the new craze is going to be in the future. What drinks will be popular? And if Soda will still even be around.
