Pretty vs Rationality
Whether its the Mustang Convertible or a Mazda Miata, it is unpractical. The prices for a convertible are very expensive, yet the uses are limited, and the space...what space? Driving in the snow/rain is tough enough, but with a convertible it is nearly impossible. So why do people look over the rationality part when they consider to buy a convertible? It is not economically effective at all. The prices for cars depreciate as soon as you drive it out of the lot.
Economic theories state that human beings are generally rational, so what is rational about an expensive car that has no purpose.
People are also driven by materialistic things and beauty. Convertibles are for show basically, it shows that you accomplished something in your life, it shows that you are cool and that you can afford something that is impractical, it shows the jealousy in your neighbors eyes when you drive by. Those reasons alone outweigh practicality.

Personally, I love the look of convertibles, and think that they are definately all for show. They aren't realistic, I do agree. But then again, what car really is? The SUV takes up so much gas... and with those prices sky rocketing... a family who makes enough for the car, may be put over top by gas... then again, the smaller cars, which take less gas, have less room... its all in what you are willing to sacrafice I guess. Looks, prices, space, gas milage. ..
