Star Wars Toy
In a marketing gimmick, Hasbro (the nation's #2 toy maker) will be selling 50,000 empty toy boxes, with a certificate redeemable for four Star Wars action figures at a later date. This gimmick originated in 1977, coinciding with the release of the first Star Wars movie.
This latest attempt to escalate the toy market comes before Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, the final Star Wars movie, and undoubtedly, one of the biggest movies of the summer.
The empty box promotion is aimed more at collectors than at young children simply wanting toys. The idea for this gimmick came in 1977 when demand for anything Star Wars far exceeded the supply. This was an easy way to continue selling toys without actually having the product. The idea was revolutionary and still appears to work wonders today.
The third movie in the Star Wars trilogy is destined to be one of the biggest movies of all time (considering it will more than likely be the last, and considering how well the first two films did at the box office). Any Star Wars products will continue to sell quickly, especially as buzz for the film increases as its release date gets closer.

I think that this is a great idea as along as Hasbro keeps their part of the bargain and will eventually get the Star Wars action figures to its customers. Then Hasbro doesnt have to mass produce and make a profit in the end with out worrying that it might cost too much.
It is a very economically way of thinking, Hasbro does not have to predict future sales of the product and does not have to waste money on overproduction. The customers have the satisfaction of knowning that they are garunteed toy and do not have to worry about waiting in line to buy it.
I think that it is a smart way for Hasbro to keep bringing in money while they are producing more products. At least this way they don't have to worry about not selling the products. The amount of Star Wars fans is probably the largest it has ever been. Most adults today grew up with Star Wars. Our children are falling in love with the old and new stories just like we did. We had the Star Wars special editions that came into the theatres when we were kids. Star Wars is one of the most marketable products out there. I look for fans to keep buying up the the release of the final film.
I also think that Hasbro was very smart by producing more products as Star Wars has been around for generations and will continue to be popular. And something that is as popular as Star Wars, it will continue to create money just off its history and quality.
